north shore adventures

August 5, 2011

Last weekend Dan and I took our friends visiting from England up to the north shore of lake superior. We had one particularly lovely day where we explored Tettegouche State Park and found a waterfall to swim under. We were hiking way up high – you can see an aerial shot of the river below – when we spotted people swimming. It was about all we could do to keep from running down, stripping to our underwear and swimming in the cold, taconite-coloured water.

Oh and those doughnuts? They were indeed the world’s best.

this week i…{part iv}

1. Ate lemon-braised chicken with beans everyday for lunch. Leftovers rock my face.

2. Spent a lot of time rearranging furniture and oohing over some new additions to our house, especially the long wooden desk that I am now doing all of my blogging from.

3. Started reading this book for my book club. I’ve snorted out loud a few times.

4. Remembered how good these brownies are when someone else again made them and wrote to tell me about it. I love that stuff. You there reading? You make this really fun, especially when you say hello. So thanks.

5. Ate my body weight in peanut butter on toast.

6. Thought longingly about Autumn and baking things filled with cinnamon and nutmeg…then slapped myself in the face for ever wishing away a summer day.

7. Drank a lot of Pimm’s.

8. Had cereal for breakfast and dinner in one day.

9. Welcomed my best friend in the world and her lovely beau to the U.S. from England. They’ll be here ten glorious days for frolicking in Minneapolis, up north, and in Chicago. I’ll be blogging still, don’t you worry.

Read Part I, Part II, and Part III.

scenes from the weekend

July 18, 2011

This weekend was several kinds crazy in Minneapolis.

Crazy bad because the dew point was around 80 all weekend and the heat index around 110F/43C. What that means is that it felt like we were living in the rainforest minus the monkeys. p.s. I do not have air conditioning.

It was crazy good because I was finally able to play with the Canon 20D camera that my amazingly generous Father-in-Law gave me recently along with a new lens. This is my first DSLR and I spent the whole weekend playing around, evidenced here. You can tell I’m still getting the hang of it but I’m so excited to start experimenting.

There was also a fun trip to the Band Box Diner, beers, a film at the cinema, homemade ice cream making with friends, Mexican soda, three adopted pots of herbs (mint, rosemary, chives), World Cup football, and lots of non-cooked meals.

p.s.
