english love (times nine)

March 19, 2010

I’m back from my jam-packed trip home to England and it was the best ever! I literally did not spare myself a second and had plans every single day and night. It’s all good though – I wouldn’t have had it any other way! I got to see all of my very best friends and all of my family – perfect!

I also, of course, managed to fit in some classic British culinary delights, including but not limited to: fish and chips, a full English brekkie, a Sunday roast, crumpets, a scotch egg, two curries, bacon sarnies (times a million), proper pie with mash and gravy, crazy amounts of tea, a pork pie, and cheese out the wazoo. The only thing I think I missed was a classic post-pub kebab. Which is likely not such a bad thing…

Some highlights:

1. Having crumpets (amongst many other things) awaiting me at my best friend’s house when I arrived. Toasted and covered with lashings of butter:

2. Heading to Sheba on Brick Lane for an almighty Indian feast (I had Lamb Rogan Josh):

3. My first dinner back on home soil being fish and chips:

4. Waking up to this my first morning home:

Yeah, my best friend is pretty amazing! I love her! An English muffin with a fried egg on top, bacon, proper English sausages (my heart aches!), and some hash browns. To make this a “proper” full English, you’d want to be seeing some baked beans, fried mushrooms, and fried tomatoes. Luckily, I had these on the side instead:

Chocolate digestives, to dunk in my morning tea! As if! Love her.

5. A trip home/to London is not complete without a visit to Borough Market:

I’ve only ever been at the weekends before when it is literally insane to get around. Apparently Thursday is the day to go!

sheep in central London…

Look at all that glorious, glorious cheese!

Rocking.

6. Remember I mentioned having dinner at Le Mercury? Well, never mind the fact that I was there with three of my favourite people ever, the food was also awesome and it is about the most reasonably-priced place in the world (ok, maybe just in London) considering it’s location! Starters from £3.95 and mains from £6.95! Amazingly good value!

I had the pear, blue cheese, and walnut salad with balsamic and french dressing to start and followed it up with this roast breast of Barbary duck on garlic potato mash, savoy cabbage and red wine jus…the photo does it no justice whatsoever…

7. Heading to Bristol to visit a good friend who’s about to have a baby and getting treated to proper pie, mash, mushy peas and gravy at Pieminister at Bristol’s Glass Arcade (a covered market). HEAVEN.

8. Remembering my love for scotch eggs and devouring this giant one at a pub in north London while out drinking copious amounts of cider with my brothers and sister. Win and win.

9. Bringing home some long-lost loves to prolong the joy:

Yorkie bar, Kit Kat Chunky, Wine Gums, Walkers Prawn Cocktail flavoured crisps, Hula Hoops, crumpets, Tesco muesli!, Hobnobs, Quality Street, Cadbury’s Heroes, Dairy Milk, and Jaffa Cakes.

So, there you have it. A very abbreviated version of my trip home, in food.
